Real People, White background, One light

White paper, an Umbrella and One light…

One of the best parts of my job has always been engaging with real people during shoots. Capturing those authentic moments with one light and a white background keeps it simple, also no retouching!

After the click of the camera, there's the excitement of revealing the images. Seeing their faces light up as they connect with their own essence on screen – that's where the real magic happens. It's pure joy to share those genuine reactions and celebrate the uniqueness of each person I photograph.

So, there you have it, folks. It's not just about taking pictures; it's about sharing moments, laughter, and stories. Photography is my way of connecting with the world, one person at a time. Cheers to the fun and fulfillment it brings!

When every shot is a winner

I recently photographed Mario Chiesa and Luis Buzzio for a cheeky Toyota Commercial.

After we got the serious things out of the way we decided to have some fun. Get ready for a masterclass in facial expressions! Both of these guys have more range than a Swiss army knife. Seriously, they went from "confused puppy" to "sly fox" in the blink of an eye. Mario’s eyebrows deserve their own zip code because they have a life of their own.

Being able to bring out a variety of facial expressions with people I’m photographing is always a challenge so it was extra fun to work with professional actors and see what they could pull off.

The next time the emoji collection is updated, they should definitely consider these guys.

Ever Brighter Campaign with University of Miami

Touring the Medical Campus

It’s been an amazing few months working with the University of Miami to complete a library of images for the Ever Brighter Campaign. We’ve been all over the campaus, and completed the project giving the medical campus some attention.

We photographed their state of the art facilities including MRI labs, physical therapy labs, and hospital training rooms. The staff and students were amazing to work with. I really enjoyed meeting everyone and learning about all the projects they were working on.

Enjoy the gallery it’s only a fraction of what we completed for the project. University of Miami is thrilled with the library we were able to create and we’ve already spotted images out in the wild.

Adobe Generative fill - Playing with the new norm - Goodbye retouchers??

Today I was playing with Adobe Generative Fill. This tool, powered by Adobe Firefly, takes photo editing and art creation to a whole new level. It uses generative AI technology to fill areas in an image based on a text prompt you provide. You can easily add, remove, or replace parts of an image without damaging the original. The possibilities are virtually endless.

You can change backgrounds, add objects, remove blemishes, and even extend your image with realistic new bounds. Accessing the Generative Fill tool is available through the Adobe Firefly website for subscribers, and it's also integrated into the Photoshop Beta app.

My Very first try, very commercial

I started with a typical scenario. One where I need to add a background to an image that what shot on a white seeemless. Also of note, this is my first attempt (literally with no other training other than the video above.)

Before…

View fullsize

After…

View fullsize

Here’s what I actually did…

Apply B/W Curve in Capture One >>Open image in Photoshop >> Add 16:9 crop >> Select Subject >> Inverse Selection >> Generative fill prompt “Add a bright background like US’s Joshua Tree album” >> Add Noise (for effect) >>
Save

Total time 3 minutes!!!

Then I went…..well a little nuts:

From this:

To this awesomeness, in no time at all!

I followed a simple workflow to accomplish this task. Firstly, I used the lasso tool to select a specific section of the image. Then, I entered random, funny, or weird prompts to see what the AI would generate in response. From the generated results, I chose my favorite option and proceeded. The selection process itself was quite time-consuming as the AI's outputs could range from hilarious to completely unrelated or bizarre.

However, amidst the amusing and off-topic suggestions, I found some pretty good options. As you can see, even with my sense of humor running wild like an alien invasion, I was able to create content to my heart's content!

Wow! Adobe Generative Fill….All I can say is wow and I am glad that I am not a professional conceptual retoucher!

Take a look at the video Phlearn made about it. This is what peaked my interest to start playing.

Jorge Ramos and Olga Tañón - Algo Personal

I recently travelled to Central Florida on a whirlwind adventure to photograph Jorje Ramos and Olga Tañón for their TV show, "Algo Personal," on Vix.

Converting a cinema room into a studio was no small feat, but with the help of the amazing Eduardo Bono of TelevisaUnivision we made it happen. With limited time, we swiftly rearranged furniture, adjusted lighting, and set up my equipment.

Positioned hilariously in the corridor adjacent to the cinema room, I embraced the unconventional. Working with Jorje and Olga was an absolute pleasure. Their charm and professionalism making the limited timeframe a breeze.

Enjoy!

Steve

Auditory Spatial Laboratory - University of Miami

This post brings you more from my recent work for the University of Miami and my latest adventure led me to the audiology lab. Dr. Hillary Snapp, an audiology specialist, gave me a tour of the Auditory Spatial Laboratory, and let me tell you, it was impressive.

Dr. Snapp's research is focused on auditory perception and how we process sound in space. Her lab is equipped with some pretty cool tools, like a head and torso simulator and a sound booth that can simulate different environments. I even got to try on a pair of headphones that had microphones built-in to capture my individual ear shape, which was pretty mind-blowing.

One of the most interesting things I learned was how our brain processes sound differently depending on the direction it's coming from. Dr. Snapp's research is looking at ways to improve hearing aid technology to better mimic the way our brain processes sound.

Overall, it was a fascinating experience getting to explore the Auditory Spatial Laboratory and learn about Dr. Snapp's research. It's amazing how much there is to discover about something as seemingly simple as hearing. I can't wait to see where her research takes us in the future!

Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory - University of Miami

Hey there! I recently had the opportunity to photograph The University of Miami Health System, and one of the labs that really stood out was the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. These guys treat some of the sickest patients, and let me tell you, it was intense and impressive being in the operating room.

Photographing in a sterile environment was definitely a challenge - I had to be super careful with every movement and make sure not to touch anything without gloves on. Plus, the bright lights in the operating room made it tricky to get the perfect shot. But I managed to capture some amazing images of the surgeons at work.

Our model, who wasn't actually getting surgery, fell asleep during the shoot. I guess they found the environment calming, which is actually pretty cool if you think about it.

What really blew my mind was how these guys performed the surgery. It's a minimally invasive technique that uses small incisions and specialized tools to perform the surgery. The benefits are huge, like less scarring, faster recovery, and lower risk of infection. And I didn’t pass out!! Haha ;)

All in all, it was an incredible experience getting to photograph such an impressive lab. I hope my pictures do it justice!

Oil, Grease and Snow... Let's GO!

Recently I had the pleasure of photographing the hardworking team of mechanics for Denver's RTD, who keep the city's buses going in all sorts of weather. And let me tell you, these guys know their stuff! They're out there rain or shine, snow or sleet, making sure the buses are in tip-top shape and ready to hit the road.

I remember one particularly chilly day when I was there. It wasn't quite a blizzard, but there was definitely a bit of snow on the ground. Despite the cold, the mechanics were hard at work, rolling up their sleeves and getting their hands dirty.

I was impressed by their team-spirit and skill. They are able to diagnose and fix all problems with the vehicle fleet. And they do it all with a smile, even with fingers numb from the cold.

I’m continually impressed to see how these mechanics keep the city moving, no matter the weather. They're the unsung heroes of the public transportation system, and I felt lucky to have had the chance to document their hard work, and make them the heroes for a change.

A Bus Campaign in the Rain

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Portland, OR to photograph Transdev, and let me tell you, it was a memorable trip. On the first day, it rained non-stop, but I didn't let that dampen my spirits. I saw it as an opportunity to capture some unique shots of the buses and drivers in the rain, which turned out to be quite striking.

Thankfully, the sun finally came out on the second day, just in time for our visit to an amazing waterfall. I got some fantastic shots of the bus driving along the scenic route, with the waterfall in the background. It was a breathtaking sight.

Despite the challenges of the weather, I managed to capture some stunning images of Portland's public transport system. It's always a joy to travel to new places and explore different photography opportunities.

If you're ever in Portland, keep an eye out for the photographer with a camera in hand, ready to capture the perfect shot. It might just be me.

Loving the lifeStyle at Chotto Matte

Working on lifestyle shoots with Hotels, Restaurants & Resorts like the architecturally stunning Chotto Matte, is among my favorite things to photograph. To have a space like this as a backdrop is what makes my job fun, to capture images of their vibrant lifestyle was a blast. Starting with interiors (almost architectural) and then moving to happy people having good time. The staff, talent and DJ were on point and so were the cocktails... Not that I would know HAHA!

Sailing La Vagabonde: A Beautiful Family Adventures

Why do you want to be a photographer? Well it’s for jobs like this!

The Brief:

“Go to the Bahamas and spend a week taking photographs of a beautiful family (who are delightful by the way) while sailing a Catamaran on turquoise waters”
YES!!!

Needless to say, it was my absolute pleasure to spend time with the You Tube channel Sailing La Vagabonde. Riley Whitelum and Elayna Carausu cruise the world with their children on their blue-water catamaran, from which they run the Youtube channel “Sailing La Vagabond” which currently has 1.82 Million subscribers. Along with their kids, they are all living an incredible life, a fun family exploring the world. Every ride on the dinghy turns into an adventure, unless your Riley, then it can be a great place for a nap! Huge thanks go to Jorge Brillembourg (JC) of Beyond Full Service Productions for making it all happen!

Boeing Magic

I love the places that my job takes me, and I love the people I meet when I get there. Photographing the team that keeps Boeing running (and flying) was incredible. Going into one of the simulators was a bucket-list item and having a go at landing a triple seven a lifetime memory!

University of Miami Marine Campus

I know we are blasted with bad news on a daily basis, but it’s important to remember that there are good people everywhere doing amazing things to help solve the worlds biggest problems. And if you are looking for some faith in humanity (I always am!) then look no further than Virginia Key FL. The work being done at UM RSMAS (The Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science) blows me away.

They want to play a leading role in the development of sustainable seafood, yellowtail snapper (delicious!) is just one of nearly 10 different species, including flounder, mahi-mahi (can’t go to the FL Keys without a Mahi sandwich and a cold one), red snapper, cobia, almaco jack, Nassau grouper, hogfish, and even stone crabs. They are working to find the most cost-effective and environmentally sound methods to raise seafood in aquaculture facilities, and then just share the knowledge with the industry! So that you and I can eat delicious seafoodie-goodness sustainably. OH YEAH!

They are also working on coral propagation and restoration (extremely necessary to help with the recovery of threatened coral species), ways to increase the resilience of corals in coastal communities, making them more resilient to bleaching and they study the effects of waves and wind with a massive wind-wave-storm simulator that can run a range of experiments about how wind and waves interact during hurricanes, as well as decipher how hurricane landfalls can impact coastal communities, structures, and ecosystems.

WOW, what a day!!

Welcome to the University of Miami

It has been my absolute pleasure to spend a handful of days this past fall at the University of Miami. The UM Division of Development and Alumni Relations was eager to rebuild their library with images of student life, educational moments and a plethora of stories that tell the tale of just how amazing UM is.

With, by far, the most fun team of creative individuals, I have been more than happy to oblige these last few months, capturing images of every campus and the student experience therein.

We did budget for multiple scout days, so we weren’t waiting around for happy accidents, but we also planned some time to do just that for spontaneity. Curated by UM’s inhouse team and Select Services, we were able to organize shots of students in their classrooms, residential areas, public areas and many great backdrops around campus.

Science mode activated! - Amazing People at M.I.T.

I recently went to Boston for a project at MIT Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, more specifically portraits of their Intramural faculty members. These amazing folks do incredible work that gives me faith in humanity.

I know this is not everyone’s cuppa-tea but my love of science and all things technology gets excited by, “transcription and RNA splicing, extracellular matrices, trolled-release films and nanoparticles… even… long-term and controlled-release drug delivery systems” wow!

The future is bright!

Thank you for having me MIT, it was a total blast.

Norwegian and Think Twice Media

I struggle to slap a coat of paint on to a bedroom wall but Brazilian artist Ernesto Kunde @kundeart takes rolling to a whole new level!

Kunde, the winner of the Norwegian Cruise Lines Call to Artists contest, painted this mural on the Norwegian Cruise Line terminal at PortMiami.

The initiative called on all emerging and established South Florida artists to submit original artwork to be considered for the mural. Each year, the program resets and a new mural design is selected, allowing the Company and The Nader Museum, to continue supporting South Florida artists for years to come.

The multi-story original masterpiece inspired by Miami’s coveted mangroves, is visible to all as it is showcased on the Company’s new state-of-the-art terminal at PortMiami. Kunde becomes the first winner of the Call to Artists contest, securing the $100,000, a 10-day artist residency at the Artist Loft on Oceania Cruises and the honor of having his artwork displayed at NCL’s terminal for a year.

It was a great pleasure to photograph his process!

After a total corporate rebrand, Breezeline commissioned me to showcase their workforce environment. At Breezeline they like to say “there is no ego to get in the way” - I couldn’t agree more!

I loved helping Breezeline showcase their employees, a broad-based group of individuals as diverse as the communities they proudly serve.

Working with Breezeline, was a breeze! (yeah, you see what I did there)
