Colonial Williamsburg on 120 Film
It’s been 20 years since I last shot a roll of film, but during a trip to Colonial Williamsburg with my family, I used my Dad’s old Hasselblad (now securely in my care) to create some interesting images. This wasn’t just any camera—it’s the one I like to say he shot the Beatles with. Whether that’s true or not… Maybe?! I know he’s photographed the band, and I know he owned this camera, so for me, that’s enough!
Shooting 120 film again felt great and fitting for a place like Williamsburg. It’s a slower process than digital, requiring patience and focus - Manual focus LOL!! With only 12 shots per roll, it was lovely to make each frame count. Despite the heat, humidity, and rain, it was a great way to connect with the moment and with my family. My two sons were shooting 35mm film alongside me, adding a sense of shared nostalgia to the day.
Shooting with the Hasselblad in Williamsburg felt like picking up where Dad left off. He always says, ‘Just the one frame… that’s enough.’ And he’s right. It isn’t about perfection, but about making each shot count.
Cheers,
Steve
